This week, the featured congressional candidate is April Freeman.  Florida has quite a few  great democratic candidates for office.  We must seize the moment to recognize what talent is appearing on the down ticket.   Congressional District 17 is fortunate to have April running and we are fortunate to have someone represent Florida with a history of passion for saving the environment.  April is a strong woman with a vision.

A Southwest Florida Democrat is calling on the federal government to designate Lake Okeechobee as a national monument.

April Freeman, a Cape Coral Democrat running for Congress, said Tuesday that President Barack Obama should designate the lake as a national monument through executive order. The action, she said, would expedite clean-up, and “ensure appropriations for needed repairs and water quality projects.”

“The federal government already owns and maintains the Herbert Hoover Dike that surrounds Lake Okeechobee, and the poisonous water being released from the lake through the Caloosahatchee River and killing the protected wetlands and wildlife of J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge,” she said in prepared remarks.

Freeman is running in Congressional District 17, in hopes of unseating incumbent Republican U.S, Rep. Tom Rooney. The newly drawn districtcovers all of part of nine counties, including Lee, Charlotte, Polk and Highlands counties.

We need candidates like April who are absolutely focused on the environment.  Florida has a whole state that is impacted by  drilling, fracking and  legislators willing to all but sink the state.

April stated,  “I have been an environmental activist for years and have closely been following the water release issues from Lake O for as long as I can remember.”

From her biography on her website, please get to know this candidate and appreciate how fortunate Florida is to have such a candidate standing up for the Florida Everglades , Lake Okeechobee and bring awareness to the real effect of Climate Change.  She is actually trying to save the lake !  She wants a clean Sunshine State.

She wants a Florida that is not sinking into the ocean.

April has the experience necessary to lead District 17.  She is a graduate of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale, where she studied Communications, Economics and Political Science.

April is a business owner, working in film and television production, she is a union member of IATSE. Her company specializes in development, finance and brand licensing. You can see some of her work like “Hemingway and Gelhorn” on HBO.

April has worked tirelessly to raise more money through the means of grassroots donations, than any Democrat who has ever run in southwest Florida. She wants the people who donate to her campaign to know that she is invested in this campaign.  April believes grassroots fundraising will make her accountable to the people and not indebted to corporations.

April resides in Cape Coral, where she is married her high school sweetheart, David who's a union pipe-fitter. Together they have raised two daughters, have one grandchild

Please take time to visit her website and donate what you can.   She is a grassroots mover and shaker.   She needs those $3.00 donations.   I also encourage you to visit her page and share the petition ( after signing of course) to have Lake Okeechobee declared a national monument.

April is a member of 90 for 90 and her campaign can be followed on that site as well as her own.  Please stand with April and for Florida come this November.  We are in deep water and that is not a metaphor.   April knows the environment is getting worse in Florida.   Climate Change is real.

Please go to April Freeman’s website for Congress and help her take a seat in Congress.  Help her help Florida.
