I am upset about this bill but not just about the obvious Gay situation.
There is a reason it is called Parental Rights and it’s dangerous.
Why have a nurse? Why have a counselor? Parents who abuse their kids can have access to info the school finds out from students who want to talk.
HB 1557 takes three key steps to protect students and put power back in the hands of parents:
- This bill prohibits classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity in K-3 classrooms, and after 3rd grade, these conversations need to be age-appropriate.
- The bill ensures that at the beginning of every school year, parents will be notified about healthcare services offered at the school, with the right to decline any service offered.
- The bill ensures that whenever a questionnaire or health screening is given to K-3 students, parents receive it first and provide permission for the school to administer the questionnaire or health screening to their child.
This will stop children from going to their teacher or counselor and talk about abuse sexual or otherwise happening at home because the abuser can have access to the conversation.
“Parental Rights in Education empowers Florida’s parents and safeguards our children,” said Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez. “This bill refuses to allow school boards and teachers unions the ability to hide information about students from their parents.
These are a few things in that bill
and is confusing and bank on fear of lawsuit...teachers will hand over info from kids.
The Parental Bill of Rights does not mandate that health-care providers or counselors disclose children’s statements made in confidence. It does specify that state employees (such as teachers or licensed counselors in a school) cannot “encourage or coerce” children to withhold information from their parents. This permits children to disclose and share information with their parents based on their own discretion. Such a provision protects children’s privacy while also recognizing the value of parental engagement for navigating challenging health issues.
Want to bet kids will clam up and be afraid to talk now or disclose info knowing it can get back to the parents.?
